I renamed the php folder under XAMPP php_old, downloaded PHP 5.x.x but did not install. So you've installed CentOS/PHPMyAdmin/PHP/MySQLmore than once you'll know what is more than likely wrong, but you cannot remember how you did it. You want to enable the new improved MySQL extension. The default most of the time is "ext".
